It's true that he didn't help himself overmuch, and alienating the neighbours was really unfortunate. But it was also apparent that despite his curmudgeonly behaviour, there was still enough goodwill around to make sure that he didn't die alone.

Hi Grace
Thanks for that. It's very kind of you to say so.

I think that the majority of my colleagues are the same - toughened up by repeated exposure to these things, professionally detached most of the time, but always human enough to respond to the distress. The thing that motivates me through these situations is pretty much the same: what if it were me? Or someone I loved?

Thanks for the comments.Spence Kennedyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11183848895584919812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27691111.post-21901225496179314292008-12-13T19:19:00.000+00:002008-12-13T19:19:00.000+00:00This one made me cry. If he'd only been wearing one of those red buttons round his neck...

We get called out to so many geriatric falls at home, the majority through agencies like CareLink. Without the alarm, there'd be a few more sad stories like this one.

But like you say, at least George died in a comfortable bed, warm and with people around him.

Sxx

ps Glad to hear you're well. And three, sparkling, tree-sized Yo Ho Hos for Christmas! At least he had people caring for him in the hospital when he passed on :) That's a comforting thought.

Liv xxx
PS. Frankly it was incredible he'd survived that long, and lucky he was discovered when he was.

I know I'm pretty bad at following up cases, and not letting you know the outcomes. But in a way, that puts you in the same position as me. For the most part, I don't know the outcome either. I suppose the difference is that each shift I work is made up of a number of calls, so the impact is diluted, in a way. So on the day that we went out to George, we also covered seven other cases. None of them as severe, but still serious in different ways.

So apologies if it's frustrating reading this blog! I will try harder to find resolutions to these more dramatic cases.

Thanks again for the comment.Spence Kennedyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11183848895584919812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27691111.post-85051916610523337422008-12-10T14:53:00.000+00:002008-12-10T14:53:00.000+00:00thanks for letting us know the outcomethanks for letting us know the outcomeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
